Call 8-1-1 Before You Dig
Call Before You Dig This SummerDo you have projects this summer on your “honey-do” list that require you to dig? If so, be sure to call Xcel Energy at 8-1-1 to have a specialist come out and check the area for any live natural gas lines. For your safety, below is a list of tips to recognize a pipeline leak:
- Sight: Natural gas is colorless but if you notice a vapor, bubbling, blowing, dead or dying vegetation (in an otherwise healthy area), blowing dirt or dust from the ground, flames escaping the ground or burning above ground, contact the Xcel Energy Emergency number right away.
- Sound: If you hear a slight hissing to a roaring sound from the ground and there is no other immediate source nearby, contact the Xcel Energy Emergency number right away.
- Smell: Mercaptan is added to natural gas to help us identify the gaseous presence. It may smell like sulfur or rotten eggs. If you suspect such a smell could be linked to a gas leak, contact the Excel Energy Emergency number right away.
